Head-of-Line Blocking

Meaning

Head-of-Line Blocking (HOL Blocking) describes a performance impediment in queuing systems where the processing of the first item in a queue prevents or delays the processing of subsequent items, even if those later items are logically ready for independent execution. In crypto systems architecture, this often manifests in blockchain transaction processing or centralized exchange order matching, leading to increased latency and reduced throughput for unrelated operations.
