MACD, or Moving Average Convergence Divergence, is a trend-following momentum indicator that illustrates the relationship between two moving averages of a cryptocurrency’s price. Mechanism
The MACD indicator is calculated by subtracting the 26-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA) from the 12-period EMA, producing the MACD line. A nine-period EMA of the MACD line itself, known as the signal line, is then plotted on top of the MACD line. The divergence or convergence of these lines, along with their relation to a zero line and a histogram representing their difference, generates actionable trading signals.
Methodology
Traders employ MACD as a component of their systematic trading strategies to confirm trends, detect momentum shifts, and time entry and exit points. A common methodology involves seeking bullish crossovers (MACD line crosses above signal line) for buy signals and bearish crossovers (MACD line crosses below signal line) for sell signals.
